Job Title: Residence Advisor

Reports to: Director of Case Management & Programming

FLSA: Part Time Non-Exempt

Work Location: YMCA Downtown Branch, Syracuse, NY

Shift Schedule: Saturday & Sunday - 8 hours weekly

Salary Range: $24.00/hour

Position Summary: This position supports the mission and work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization. Under the direction of the Director of Case Management & Programming, the Residence Advisor will provide individual case management to help residents maintain recovery from addiction and transition into self-sufficiency and independent living. The Residence Advisor will work 1-on-1 with residents to develop specific goals and objects to continue down the path of success. The Residence Advisor assures the well-being for each participant in line with YMCA of the USA guidelines and association policies in accordance with their training.

Essential Functions: • Models the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. • Develops and maintains positive relationships with individuals and groups at all levels of the organization; supporting members connect with each other and the YMCA. • Maintains physical presence, always remains alert while on duty. • Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures; completes related reports as required. • Review all referrals to the Residence department and interview potential residents. • Make service recommendations to enhance the residents’ current plan for a successful stay at the YMCA. • Conduct 1-on-1 sessions with current residents to provide access to support and treatment programs. • Complete detailed case notes on each potential resident interview and current resident 1-on-1 sessions • Maintain appropriate individual file documentation as well as overall statistical information for all residents and services provided. • Schedule follow-up sessions with residents in need of periodic counseling. • Provide on-site practical assistance, crisis intervention and goal planning for residents. • Provide ongoing support, guidance and direction which will enhance an appropriate recovery and environment amongst the residence quarters. • Assist in determining if the YMCA is an appropriate housing option for each potential resident and ensure continuous support is in place for lasting results. • Provide supportive linkages between residents and referral agencies, brokerage, networking, advocacy and local resources and support services. • Ensure residents are involved with appropriate outpatient drug and alcohol treatment and/or mental health providers. • Knows, follows, and enforces all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, procedures, and staff expectations, including those for the prevention of child abuse. • Ambassador of all YMCA programs with a focus on department offerings and member engagement. • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed. Clean and store equipment per branch procedures. • Attends all mandatory meetings and trainings. • Is willing to step up, even if outside of the position description, to contribute to the overall success of the YMCA. Experience, Education, and Qualifications: • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Human Services or related field. • Minimum three years’ experience in counseling service, residence programs, or related industry. • Demonstrates and promotes a personal understanding of and appreciation for the mission, vision, strategic outcomes, values and commitment to social responsibility of the YMCA. • Shows a commitment and concern for health and safety, acknowledges and understands how to manage and educate other of risk and harm reduction. • Possess a solid knowledge and understanding of the Social Service system, social issues pertaining to homelessness and able to refer them to the appropriate outside agency. • Demonstrates a high level of integrity by always behaving responsibly and maintains a high ethical standard. • Ability to identify and resolve problems. • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills are critical to the success of this position. • Demonstrates excellent leadership qualities, planning and organization skills, time management, attention to detail skills, with the ability to multi-task with minimal direction. • Possess and demonstrate excellent customer service, supervising, decision-making, problem solving team-oriented, creative thinking and leadership skills. • The ability to observe confidentiality. ∙ Trainings & Certifications: • Must complete annual safety, combating sexual-harassment, and child abuse prevention trainings assigned by human resources prior to direct service. • Must have current CPR and First Aid

  • On occasion ability to lift and carry children and equipment, may spend time sitting on the floor or child sized furniture.

  • Prolonged periods of standing and frequent bending.

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.

  • Will be exposed to illness-causing bacteria and viruses.

    Work Environment: This job operates in a recreational and/or educational environment. This role routinely uses standard recreation and/or office equipment. At times, employees may be exposed to undesirable working conditions, communicable infectious diseases, and risk of injury from others. All employees are required to always follow the preventative health policies of the YMCA. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to high.
