Recreation Specialist - Part-Time

Pay Range: $18.75 - $24.90 / hourly (Pay information will vary depending upon relevant experience for the position.)

Assess the abilities, interests and leisure involvement of residents. Develop, implement, and evaluate a recreation program designed to meet resident needs. Participate in multi-disciplinary care planning.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Prepare and post a weekly recreation calendar (on assigned units) by Monday of each week. Plans and assists with larger monthly events.

  • Provide a printed weekly recreation calendar to each resident who requests one.

  • Communicate program information at morning report with feedback from care plan team.

  • Begin scheduled activities on time according to the printed schedule.

  • Initiate contact with inactive residents providing 1:1 activities according to department policies and procedures per record audit.

  • Request/schedule volunteers for special events within a timely manner.

  • Complete designated portions of the MDS 3.0 comprehensive assessment in accordance with department policies and procedures.

  • Complete initial recreation assessment according to department policies and procedures.

  • Prepare and present an individualized recreation care plan at team meetings according to department policies and procedures.

  • Participate in scheduled family conferences.

  • Contact new residents on assigned unit and enter initial recreation assessment within 14 days of admission. (Rehab Caseload may differ as assessments are needed within 5/7 days of admission).

  • Complete quarterly progress notes on assigned caseload on a 90 day rotation and as needed for significant changes.

  • Maintain daily attendance records of individual participation.

  • Attend all department meetings, staff and required facility in-services.

  • Participate in appropriate community workshops and conferences to enhance professional growth.

  • Assist with feeding on the units as needed

  • Required driver’s license to drive the ECH bus for resident outings

  • Maintain, order, shop, for necessary materials.

  • Verbally report findings at staff meetings.

  • Maintain certifications as necessary.

  • Provide in-service education and informative presentations to staff, families and volunteers, as requested.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation or related field, or associate’s degree in recreation or a related field.

  • One year’s experience in long-term care, or five years’ experience in recreation in long-term care.

  • Possess a valid New York State driver’s license with a clean driving record.

  • Ability to interact courteously and tactfully with staff, residents, family members, visitors, vendors and the general public.

  • Interest in and understanding of aging process and dementia together with knowledge of functional limitation of long-term care residents.

  • Ability to relate positively to residents, staff and volunteers.

  • Ability to provide training and guidance to volunteers assigned to specific programs.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Ability to work within a flexible schedule according to the needs of the department.

  • Good oral and written communication skills.

Performing duties of this job requires occasional walking and standing. Job also requires escorting and assisting residents on outings. Must be able to occasionally lift loads of 30 pounds without assistance and the ability to sit, talk, and hear is required. Must be able to push and transport resident’s in wheelchairs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

This position may be required to provide direct care or have access to resident property or belongings.

The majority of essential job duties are performed indoors, in a normal office environment as well as in resident areas where universal precautions apply. Employee may be exposed to indoor temperature fluctuations and will be exposed to various outdoor elements when going on outings.

SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIP:The work is performed within established guidelines, and requires periodic supervision. The employee exercises initiative and independent judgment to effectively perform the essential job duties of this position.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR OTHERS:The employee has no direct responsibility for others. Will be required to assist in training and orienting all new recreation staff.
