Overview

Registered Respiratory Therapists deliver both routine and critical care services for the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory dysfunction, including, but not limited to oxygen and aerosol therapy, respiratory care treatments, pulmonary diagnostic procedures, airway management, ventilator management, patient assessment and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The Registered Respiratory Therapist works independently in all areas of the hospital. They take an active role in planning departmental operations as needed.

Registered Respiratory Therapists provide the practice of the profession of respiratory therapy, which is undertaken pursuant to the direction of a duly licensed physician. This is defined as the performance of Cardio-Pulmonary evaluation, respiratory therapy treatment techniques, and education of the patient, family and public. Registered respiratory therapists may supervise respiratory therapy technicians and respiratory students in the practice of the profession. They take a decision-making role in planning patient care assignments, developing department direction and overseeing operations with recommendations provided.

Responsibilities

Meets all position qualifications/requirements including BLS certification.
Practices within the boundaries of the NYS Practice Act for Respiratory Therapist and provides care according to CVPH (generic and unit-specific) Standards of Care and Practice.
Verifies and implements physician orders.
Works collaboratively to develop/revise plan of care to include discharge plan that prescribes nursing actions to achieve age-specific outcome goals for the patient(s) with various diagnosis.
Provides respiratory care to the patient requiring monitoring/intervention with pulse oximeters, cardiac monitors, patient care devices, oxygen therapy (e.g., ventilators, compressors, metered dose inhalers, nebulizers).
Documents/Communicates respiratory care, physiological responses to other health care providers through verbal reports and patient record(s) as dictated by policy/guidelines; Reports to physician changes/deviations from expected norm and writes telephone orders for respiratory therapeutics.
Provides respiratory care through utilization of the electronic information system, (e.g, billing for treatment orders, retrieving of lab data, etc)
Provides leadership and measures effectiveness of respiratory care by providing supervision, delegation, monitoring/reassessment of all patient care as required.
Performs in crisis/emergency (e.g. code 99, 33) while maintaining a positive/ calm approach.
Provides prioritized patient/family education.
Provides respiratory care for the patient requiring pain management (surgical, chronic and terminal) according to organization and department standards.
Provides respiratory care to the patient requiring respiratory medication administration.
Provides respiratory care for the patient requiring an artifical airway including intubation.
Provides respiratory care for the patient requiring specimens.
Demonstrates respect for the diversity of patient population and provides holistic care for the dying patient and supports patient spirituality.
Provides care using infection control practices as outlined in hospital policies/procedures (e.g. Universal Standard Precautions and Isolation Techniques).
Advocates patient rights and demonstrates a working knowledge of Advance Directive practices, organ donation and procurement as outlined by CVPH policy/procedures.
Manages conflict/identifies ethical dilemmas and assists patients and families in resolving.
Supports fluctuation in patient care needs by being available for overtime when required.
Provides respiratory care for patients requiring diagnostic tests, studies and and of cardiopulmonary and neurophysiological studies related to respiratory care. Coordinates patient scheduling as necessary.
Provides respiratory care to the neonate to geriatric patient and is able to state age specific needs and behaviors and modify care to meet those needs.
Performs EKG applications.
Provides supervision and technical assistance to certified and licensed technician and students.
Performs routine quality control testing once or twice per week and maintains records of test results. Participates in quality assurance process.
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

1. Graduate of an approved Respiratory Program supported by the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC), or accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Eudcation Programs (CAAHEP).
2. Credentialed by the NBRC as a Registered Respiratory Therapist.
3. New York State license as a Registered Respiratory Therapist or a Registry Eligible Certified Respiratory Technician and receive NYS license as a Respiratory Therapist within one year of hire date.
4. BLS certified; ACLS certified or obtained within one year of hire; PALS preferred.
5. Credentialed by NBRC as a Certified Pulmonary Technologist preferred.
As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided.
