Social Work Services at the Mount Sinai Hospital

The Mount Sinai Hospital is a 1,134-bed facility with an extensive outpatient and specialty care network and is the largest hospital in the Mount Sinai Health Care System. It offers comprehensive social work services and programming to meet the myriad needs of the diverse populations we serve. We believe that total patient care must emphasize the physical, emotional, and social needs of each patient and their care partners. Social Workers collaborate within interprofessional teams to serve patients and the larger community from both a micro and macro level including both direct care and prevention. Founded in 1907, the Department of Social Work Services at the Mount Sinai Hospital is one of the oldest hospital social work departments in the nation with over 450 licensed social workers employed across more than 65 different program/service areas. Employment in our department provides a pathway to LCSW licensure as well as access to a broad range of continuing education, professional development and extra-curricular opportunities.

The Libertas Center for Human Rights at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, NY is seeking a Clinical Social Worker/Therapist to deliver culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, bio-psycho-social spiritual services to patients at a novel treatment center for survivors of torture and other serious human rights violations. The Clinical Social Worker/Therapist will provide clients with direct services including trauma-informed psychotherapy, forensic psychological evaluations, and crisis intervention. The Clinical Social Worker/Therapist will also contribute to program development efforts. The Clinical Social Worker/Therapist reports to the Libertas Center Clinical Director. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, be well organized, and able to multi-task. This position affords the opportunity to have a significant role in an organization with substantial social impact while receiving mentoring and building unique experience for professional advancement.

The Libertas Center is a grant-funded program under the Department of Emergency Medicine at Elmhurst Hospital, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and a teaching hospital for the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The Libertas Center provides survivors of torture and human rights violations in the New York City area with comprehensive medical, mental health, social and legal services to help them regain function and restore humanity in their lives. We use a strength’s-based, client-centered and trauma-informed case management approach to provide integrated services directly on-site and through coordination with our partners within and outside the hospital to address the complex and highly interwoven needs of survivors. In addition to direct services, the Libertas Center builds capacity through education and training of medical and mental health providers, conducts research on best practices in caring for torture survivors, and advocates for policies to address survivors’ needs. With over 10 years of experience in providing holistic services to torture survivors, our team uses its multidisciplinary expertise and an evidence-based approach to improve the well-being and quality of life for this vulnerable yet highly resilient population.
