GENERAL DUTIES
Conducts academic research in connection with CUNY programs; may assist faculty, staff, and students in conducting research and lead research efforts involving others.
Develops research plans and proposals and participates in acquiring funding
Collects, analyzes, and assures validity of data
Writes progress reports; writes and publishes findings
Collaborates with internal and external colleagues
Adheres to standards for safety and hygiene and ethical conduct as defined by the University and relevant outside parties

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
The City College of New York (CCNY) is accepting applications for a university-funded Research Associate. The position will report to the Director of the CUNY Energy Institute and will be located on the City College campus. The Research Associate will oversee several critical responsibilities essential to advancing the research objectives of the Grid Modernization Center, including:
- Research Support and Collaboration
The Research Associate will provide support for ongoing research contracts, including those with the US DOE Office of Electricity and NASA. This support will include research execution, preparing progress reports, assisting with supervising PhD students, and collaborating with faculty to develop research papers for dissemination.
- Research Project Management and Proposal Development
Additionally, the Research Associate will assist faculty with managing ongoing research projects within the Grid Modernization Center and will play a pivotal role in supporting the development of new research proposals aimed at securing further funding for energy storage and grid modernization initiatives.
- Facility Operation and Maintenance
The Research Associate will ensure the continued operation and maintenance of two critical facilities:
The Steinman C11 Facility, which contains a 500 KWh long-duration power backup system.
The Steinman C12 Facility, responsible for the 500 KWh demand charge/demand response system.
These systems, established through investment from NYSERDA, DOE, and ConEd, must be operated and maintained according to stringent safety protocols and efficiency standards to avoid any disruption in service.
- Equipment Procurement and Management
The Research Associate will oversee the acquisition, installation, and management of new energy storage testing equipment, supported by the NYS Green Initiative. This includes managing large-scale battery testers, EIS systems, tomography equipment, and x-ray diffraction systems, all critical for advancing research in energy storage technologies. This supports CUNY's strategic focus on fostering innovation in green technologies and contributing to New York's green economy.
- User Training and Support
The role includes training faculty, researchers, and students on the safe and effective use of both new and existing equipment, such as battery cyclers, Biologic EIS systems, and thermal analysis tools. Facilitating user access and ensuring compliance with operational guidelines will be a central aspect of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Doctoral Degree in a related field and demonstrated research ability.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred Qualification:
Research experience in grid modernization and working with satellite receiving equipment.
COMPENSATION
Salary Range: $85,000 - $100,000
