Job Summary

The Executive Director leads program strategy, development, implementation, and performance; financial and operational planning and implementation; health and safety compliance; and other administrative decision-making for community schools, after-school, and summer programming provided on-site at several schools throughout the Lower East Side and East Village. The Executive Director is a senior leader of the organization, overseeing a multimillion-dollar budget and nearly 150 full- and part-time staff to ensure that children have the opportunities they need to enhance their well-being and socioeconomic opportunities. This role directly manages the Senior Director of Programs, Director of Finance & Administration, and the Community School team members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop the strategic vision for CSYD, in collaboration with school principals and leaders as well as internal stakeholders, leading to student and family success.

  • Design and direct innovative, research-based practices to inform new program designs and solutions and implement strategies to evaluate program performance that result in more efficacy and efficiency in the department.

  • Collaborate with EA’s Department of Research & Evaluation to track and evaluate program data to monitor programmatic trends and identify areas of opportunity and improvement.

  • Regularly conduct site visits and meetings on-site with CSYD team members and school administration to directly observe and evaluate programming.

  • Foster a workplace culture that promotes professional growth, leadership development, commitment to excellence, agility, data-based reflections, and collaboration.

  • Initiate and/or improve policies and procedures for department workflow, financial management, people management, and compliance.

  • Develop, support, and manage a team providing school-based services in order to ensure a values-driven focus on equity and excellence throughout the department.

  • Assess staffing needs; assume overall responsibility for staff recruitment, retention, development, and performance.

  • Accountable for development of program budgets that align with program goals and monitoring revenue and expenditures to ensure responsible, and on budget, fiscal management of programs and contracts.

  • Develop and formulate public and private sector fundraising plans and partnerships in coordination with the development team to ensure funding to meet departmental goals and priorities.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including NYC Department of Youth and Community Development, NYC Public Schools, and Boys and Girls Clubs of America; government and not-for-profit agencies; internal administrative departments; and leaders in other EA programs.

  • Serve as a key agency thought leader on matters related to youth development and school-based services, including by participating in relevant agency-wide meetings and other gatherings.

  • Serve as spokesperson for the work of the department.

  • Perform other duties as necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Education, Social Work or related field, or equivalent work experience.

  • Minimum of ten years of managerial experience developing, implementing and overseeing education and social service programs for children and families, or equivalent experience.

  • Experience leading strategic planning efforts, designing new programs, nurturing effective partnerships, and enhancing existing programs focused on developing the knowledge and skills of youth and families.

  • Demonstrated ability to foster a healthy, diverse, equity-focused organizational culture.

  • Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and collaboration while cultivating skills of managerial staff and providing guidance/training to professionals at all levels of an organization.

  • Proven leadership skills in managing multiple complicated funding streams and varied compliance/reporting requirements.

  • Experience in supporting grant writing and resource development with both public and private funding sources.

  • Highly effective and skilled written and verbal communicator; strong interpersonal skills; a good listener; actively seeks opinions of others in decision-making; consultative; able to inspire confidence and trust.

  • Eagerness for continuous personal and professional development and reflection.

  • Ability to manage and cultivate external partnerships.

  • Active commitment to being a dynamic, mission-focused leader who works in partnership with staff from throughout the Educational Alliance to support organizational goals and priorities.
