Position Objective:

T o lead and direct the safe and reliable operation of Metro-North’s electric traction power system. Direct the integration and facilitation of department activities concerning daily operational issues and plan future upgrades that support MNR's goals and strategic vision.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that Electric Traction facilities are maintained to proper standards and operated to support MNR services.

  • Provide input/develop plans for long-range improvements and rehabilitation of existing facilities. Assist Capital Engineering and other parties in long-range planning for electrical improvements.

  • Provide management and direction to the Power Department’s staff, including the unionized workforce.

  • Oversee the development of standards and procedures. Direct the research, review, & implementation of new technologies at all levels of the department. Provide support to the EAM development process.

  • Coordinate the needs of the Engineering Department Operation in the design, placement, application, and staging of projects related to improving the Power System infrastructure through current & future Capital programs.

  • Develop and maintain a Power Strategy forecast for the future needs of the railroad’s Power infrastructure.

  • Serve as liaison with Electric Utility companies in the planning of future service needs.

  • Direct, implement, and control the adherence to railroad and departmental safety standards.

    Required Qualifications:

    Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to work respectfully with a diverse workforce of management and unionized employees.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of electric traction and electrical systems & components .

  • Demonstrated ability to manage manpower and material within budgetary constraints .

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills .

  • Strong administrative and problem solving, and analytical skills .

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and/or comparable applications .

  • Working knowledge of OSHA statutes pertaining to Electric Transmission & Distribution .

  • Strong analytical skills to be able to evaluate new and existing products, equipment, & procedures.

  • Knowledge of applicable material standards and quality control .

  • Knowledge of safe work practices as they relate to a railroad or utility environment .

  • Strong leadership skills to foster teamwork .

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with internal departments and external agencies .

  • Strong organizational skills .

  • Able to implement and participate in Metro North’s Safety program.

  • Ability to be on call 24 hours, 7 days per week, as required .

  • Valid Driver’s license

    Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field. Demonstrated equivalent experience, education and/or technical credentials to include an additional four (4) years of related experience may be considered in place of a degree.

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in a traction power-related position.

  • Minimum of seven (7) years of experience managing a diverse, unionized workforce and/or projects.

    The Following is/are preferred:

  • Professional Engineering License.

  • Bachelor’s and/or Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering .

    This position is safety-sensitive and subject to toxicological testing.

    According to the New York State Public Officers Law & the MTA Code of Ethics, all employees who hold a policymaking position must file an Annual Statement of Financial Disclosure (FDS) with the NYS Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government (the “Commission”).

    Employees driving company vehicles must complete defensive driver training once every three years for current MNR drivers; or within 180 days of hire or transfer for an employee entering an authorized driving position.
