New York University Data Manager (Part-Time) in New York, New York

General Summary:

Seeking qualified applicant to work as a part-time data manager with Dr. Pamela Morris-Perez to support one project that is part of her center, ARCADIA (A Research Center for Adolescent Interconnected Approaches) for Suicide Prevention (https://steinhardt.nyu.edu/ihdsc/projects/arcadia) : a randomized study of a system-level strategy “WeCARE,” in two hospital emergency departments in New York City, to screen Black youth for suicide risk and connect those at risk for suicide to mental health services.

Dr. Morris-Perez also conducts an additional suicide prevention project, a cluster randomized study of a school-based mental health/suicide prevention program in California called Directing Change, where students make short films as part of a statewide film contest; and two projects in early childhood: 1) partnership work with NYC’s Department of Education to study and support the city’s universal pre-K program (https://steinhardt.nyu.edu/ihdsc/projects/nyupk) ; and 2) the study of a parenting intervention within pediatric care called Smart Beginnings (https://steinhardt.nyu.edu/ihdsc/projects/smart) . Successful candidates should have demonstrated experience building datasets for complex field research projects with multiple data sources, integrating sample enrollment, program data, and follow-up data into a single data set ready for reporting and analysis. Successful candidates should have taken coursework in data management and sophisticated data analysis. Candidates should be proactive, demonstrate excellent attention to detail, be able to collaborate and engage in teamwork, and show proficiency at effectively multi-tasking. Strong data processing, documentation, and analytical skills, and a solid understanding of quantitative research are a must. Ability to write-up data processes for internal memos, project codebooks, and publications is required. Research interest in suicide prevention, education policy, and population-level demographics is a plus.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include active involvement in all stages of data management: data set-up, management, creating and merging large datasets from REDCap and other data sources, preparing variables for analysis, real-time data quality and sample recruitment checks, aiding in the preparation and distribution of training and research materials, quantitative data analysis using a range of analytic approaches, documenting processes (through code/syntax and data manuals), creating reproducible/automated tables, and write-up of results. General work supporting the project is possible, but not necessary. The Data Manager will work closely with faculty, other research staff, and graduate and undergraduate students.

Qualifications:

Candidates should have a MA/MS and/or be working towards a PhD in statistics, developmental psychology, economics, public policy, or related social science field. Former research experience on comparable projects with data management and quantitative data analysis using STATA is critical; knowledge of other statistical software (SAS, R, is a plus). Candidates should be comfortable working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment and communicating with a wide range of individuals at all levels of the research team and the university.

  • Three or more years prior quantitative research experience, including mastery of STATA;

  • Experience setting up and documenting data systems for large and complex projects;

  • Excellent data collection/management software (e.g., REDCap) skills for entering, tracking, manipulating, checking, documenting processes; and with data analytic software (e.g., STATA) for analyzing data;

  • The ability to handle tasks requiring high levels of attention to detail, to carry complex research tasks to completion, and to efficiently manage work in the time required; and

  • Strong team-oriented skills.

Compensation:

This position is for 20 hours per week, with hybrid work (with some in person and some remote hours each week) strongly preferred for team coordination. Will consider remote work with periodic in-person meetings for excellent candidates who are outside of the NYC area (pending school-level approval). This position will start Fall 2023.

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the base hourly range for this position is $35-40/hour. New York University considers factors such as, but not limited to, the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.
