Cornell Cooperative Extension Camp Health Assistant - Hamden, NY in Hamden, New York

This position will serve as a Health Assistant at 4-H Camp Shankitunk. 4-H Camp Shankitunk is a traditional summer camp located in Delhi, NY. 4-H Camp Shankitunk operates both a day camp program (ages 6-14) and an overnight program (ages 8-16) for youth in the summer and hires approximately 50-60 seasonal camp staff members. 4-H Camp Shankitunk is owned by Delaware County and operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension Delaware County.

Responsibilities include assisting in the review, evaluation, organization, protection, and maintainance of campers' health records, as well as securing and administering medicines and treatment to campers according to physicians' orders; recording all treatment according to established procedures; and reporting required incidents to the local health department within 24 hours. Pro-actively contact and respond to parent inquiries reguarding incomplete or missing health records. This position may also assist the Camp Health Coordinator with opening day health screening and medication intake for overnight and day campers. Assist in implementing the approved plan for camper health and safety, as needed and directed.

Required Qualifications:

  • LPN or EMT licensed to practice in New York State.

  • Able to lift 20 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience or background in school, visiting, or public health nursing is desirable.

  • Certifications in CPR/AED and epi-pen as approved by the local Department of Health.

  • RN licensed to practice in New York State.

    Position Responsibilities and Essential Functions

Administrative Management – 40%

  • Review incoming campers ’ health forms for completeness.

  • Routinely and proactively contact parent/guardians when campers’ health forms are missing or incomplete.

  • File campers’ health records as directed.

  • Ensure campers' health records and medicines are kept secure and confidential.

  • Assist in the safeguarding of all medications per product directions; controlled substances must be double-locked.

  • Assist in the supervision of health and sanitation at camp and performing daily inspections of camper sleeping spaces as directed.

  • Assist in ensuring that the Health Center is cleaned and sanitized daily.

  • If requested, assist in the monitoring of medical log entries daily for common ailments and increased illness cases with similar symptoms (e.g., headache, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, eye infection, sore throat). If appropriate, communicate with the Camp Director and the local health department for the appropriate intervention strategies to be implemented at the camp to prevent illness spread and reoccurrence.

  • Assist in providing supervision and comfort for campers who are in the infirmary.

  • Work with and support others to ensure a cohesive camping environment that supports community-oriented camp culture and emphasizes acceptance, cooperation, and empathy.

Administrative Coordination/Operation – 55%

  • Assist in initial health screening of overnight and day campers and daily health surveillance of camp occupants as directed by Camp Health Coordinator and/or Camp Director. Conducting an initial health screening for each camp participant will include, but not be limited to, a review of the individual's medical information, noting health restrictions or concerns, and inspecting at check-in for signs of illness or injury.

  • Assist with handling health emergencies and injuries as directed.

Professional Improvement – 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and address changes and Association priorities.

  • Collaborate in activities that support Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions

  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.

  • Be familiar with and follow applicable federal, state, and local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement, and standards.

  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.

    Position Details

This is a part-time, nonexempt, temporary position that will run from May 1st - August 9th. Compensation ranges from $18.00 - $20.00 per hour. Compensation is commensurate with experience, certifications, responsibilities, and availability.

The position will work at 4-H Camp Shankitunk in Delhi, NY. The standard work schedule is 20 hours per week Monday through Friday and will include Sunday camper check-in beginning June 30th - July 28th. There may be potential to work additional hours, if needed, and with prior approval. Age 21+ preferred. Current certification as a NYS nurse and background/experience in camp nursing preferred.
