Queens Community House Construction Instructor in Forest Hills, New York

We are seeking a qualified Construction Instructor who is motivated to instruct young adults by sharing trade knowledge through hands-on learning experiences. You will spend time in the classroom and on construction sites developing construction skills for young adults living in Queens.  You will work on various construction service projects to ensure our young adults gain meaningful skills and work experiences they can use to pursue a lifelong career.

A Day in the Life:

  • Participate in professional development train-the-trainer courses in preparation to teach nationally recognized construction certification curriculum (specifically OSHA 30 + 10 & NCCER Core) to YouthBuild trainees.

  • Facilitate both OSHA and NCCER training curriculum and administer credential tests and track and report participant progress and results.

  • Provide remedial help and support to trainees and volunteer tutors whenever needed.

  • Teach participants hands-on general construction skills including demolition, rough framing, roofing, drywall, and finish carpentry.

  • Lead and supervise students in construction and community service projects as requested or necessary.

  • Operate and care for construction tools, materials, and equipment.

  • Ensure construction lab and worksite safety, modeling and reinforcing proper construction techniques and all trained safety procedures including proper use of hand tools, power tools, and equipment.

  • Set standards and model appropriate behavior and methods of addressing problems at the construction site.

  • Assist in developing and participating in community service projects.

  • Attend case management meetings and provide observations of participants’ strengths and weaknesses.

  • Assist in the evaluation of student knowledge and skills in construction.

  • Assist in the management of the inventory of tools, materials, supplies and maintain a weekly log.

  • Prep construction sites by cleaning obstacles and hazards.

  • Load or unload construction materials.

  • Put together and take apart temporary structures, such as scaffolding.

  • Remove, fill, or compact earth for garden and farm-based projects.

  • Perform work site clean-up.

    Construction Laborer Requirements:

  • Must have a valid driver's license and clean driving record.

  • Be at least 18 years of age.

  • OSHA or MIOSHA certified with first aid and CPR training desired.

  • Ability to pass a school fingerprint background check.

  • High School diploma.

  • Ability to do physical labor and other strenuous physical tasks.

  • Ability to work in all weather.

  • Must be punctual and reliable.

  • Strong desire to support the training and construction skills development of young adults ages 18 - 24.

  • Must have experience as a general laborer in the construction industry.
