Preference in certification may be given to successful candidates who are residents of the municipality for one month prior to the date of certification.DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for the independent performance of moderately difficult financial accounts and records maintenance. The work may require decision making as to methods to be used and classification of records and accounts. The incumbent is responsible for entering and retrieving information using computer database/spreadsheet software. This position differs from Account Clerk in that duties are more complex and represent a higher level of responsibility and independent judgement in the performance of work assignments. This position differs from that of Principal Account Clerk in that this position does not involve the extent of independent judgement and complexity of tasks. The work is performed under general supervision and although the incumbent may train lower level clerical workers, supervision need not be a responsibility of this position. Does related work as required.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either: (a)Possession of an Associate’s degree or higher in accounting, mathematics, business administration or closely related field; OR(b)Possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two (2) years of experience maintaining financial accounts and records; OR(c)An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).NOTE: Successful completion of coursework in accounting, business administration, or closely related field at a regionally accredited college or university, or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees, may be substituted for the required experience with three semester credit hours of related coursework, as indicated above, being equivalent to three months of experience.ANITICIPATED ELIGIBILITY- AGE AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:According to Civil Service Law, section 54 which became effective September 4, 2024, applicants who are within 12 months of meeting the minimum age or attaining the minimum educational requirements following the date of examination, may take the civil service exam, but will be restricted from certification until such a time that the minimum age or educational requirements are met.NOTE:Degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If the degree was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, applicant must provide independent verification of equivalency. Applicants must pay the required evaluation fee.SCOPE OF THE EXAMINATION: Written test designed to test for knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in areas such as:Name and number checkingThese questions test for the ability to distinguish between sets of words, letters, and/or numbers that are almost exactly alike. Material is usually presented in two or three columns, and you will have to determine how the entry in the first column compares with the entry in the second column and possibly the third. You will be instructed to mark your answers according to a designated code provided in the directions. Fundamentals of account keeping and bookkeepingThese questions test for a knowledge of basic principles and practices of account keeping and bookkeeping. The questions test for recognizing account keeping and bookkeeping terms, concepts and relationships; recording financial transactions; and solving elementary problems in account keeping and bookkeeping. Arithmetic computation with calculatorThese questions test for the ability to use a calculator to do basic computations. Questions will involve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. You may also be asked to calculate averages, to use percents, and to round an answer to the nearest whole number. You should bring with you a hand-held battery- or solar-powered calculator for use on this test. You will not be permitted to use the calculator function of your cell phone. Working with office recordsThese questions test your ability to work with office records. The test consists of two or more sets of questions, each set concerning a different problem. Typical record keeping problems might involve the organization or collation of numerical data from several sources; maintaining a record system using running balances; or completion of a table summarizing data using totals, subtotals, averages and percents. You should bring with you a hand-held battery- or solar-powered calculator for use on this test. You will not be permitted to use the calculator function of your cell phone.
